Our four fool-proof criteria to launch a successful SaaS business.

1. Administration is key

Whatever you develop, it has to be absolutely necessary, indispensable. To the point of bringing your client to tears if you ever dare take it away from them. So, if you are not into banking or airline reservations, what could that be? Anything that has to do with addministration, budgeting, accounting. The essential, daily chores of doing business and getting paid.

2. Focus on a niche market

Don't fall into the trap of running after the billion dollar markets. You could try a new angle on one of those, sure, but why bother if there are million dollar markets by the dozen just waiting for you? Look for a niche market. But only one where insiders are willing to share their very special knowledge of how they do business with you.

3. Associate with disseminators

Partner with associations and other disseminators. Ideally your insiders (see point 2) are leading members of a professional association serving your niche market. Craft a deal with them so they have a vested, not necessarily monetary, interest in your success.

4. They do it with Excel!

If the majority of your niche markets target customers are using Excel to do what you want to replace with your Web App and if the underlying rules and regulations change regularly, then you are in for a winner. Examples? Tax, royalty management or almost any administrative work in the healthcare sector.

Better performance and design - January 5, 2010

Wiki 2.4.29 features a big performance jump and a new convenient setup and upgrade procedure.

Our first goal was to recheck all potential security holes and fix them, so that you can feel 100% confident and secure with running telepark.wiki on one or more sites. We did inspect every folder, file, call and response and got there.

No software is 100% secure but we keep our eyes permanently open to potential vulnerabilities and are committed to fixing them if and when they show up.

50% performance increase

Our second goal was to improve the user experience. We already introduced the new dynamic loading tree into earlier versions of telepark.wiki, but now we've gone even further. As telepark.wiki is an interactive AJAX Web software, it's already quite fast but we aimed to reduce unnecessary calls to the server using an advanced caching system and minimizing javascript files.

The tangible result is an even faster wiki. Much faster. Tree load times are significanlty reduced. The loading of the initial page is speedier because of the compressed and cached files. Cross-project priority lists - November 24, 2009

The ToDo Summary module of telepark.wiki has been revamped to give a better cross-project overview of tasks. Finally, with the new version, we started using it ourselves.

ToDo Summary grabs the top 3 tasks from multiple project ToDo Lists and presents them as an integrated list on a Wiki page.

Until now, this was a bland list without task IDs, project titles or other information.

And to tell you the truth, we did not use ToDo Summary ourselves. While the collaborative ToDo List module of telepark.wiki is at the core of all our operations, ToDo Summary was not attractive enough.

That changed yesterday. Our new version of ToDo Summary provides an appealing and clear overview of priority tasks across multiple projects. In Edit mode, you can define which ToDo Lists are to be grabbed for dynamic task updates and the ToDo Summary page inherits all the user group and permissions configuration possibilities of telepark.wiki.

Each task is listed with its ID and titles are clickable to jump right into the approriate ToDo List page. We are thinking about adding reporting-type data at the header of the ToDo Summary page, such as stats about how many tasks were closed in a specific timeframe. What do you think we should add? New blog module for telepark.cms - November 12, 2009

Our CMS got a new blog module today with a comments system, RSS feed generation and SEO-optimized URLs.

The new blog system can support any number of blogs within a telepark.cms site, not just one. It is on display on our Website at http://www.telepark.com to power the Outsourcing for small business owners Blog and this telepark Web Software Blog. The blog overview page shows the latest entry in full length and older entries with their first paragraph.

Comments can be activated and deactivated for each blog entry separately. An RSS feed is generated automatically and includes pictures, if any. The new telepark.cms blog module also supports the auto-creation of SEO-friendly URLs and supports subdomain publishing of each blog. The regular telepark.cms SEO functions for custom titles, keywords and page descriptions apply to blog entries, too. Contact us for more information using the message box in the right column.

Search engine with a memory - November 11, 2009

A new fulltext search engine has been added to telepark.cms providing fast search results and a dynamic history of previous searches.

The new telepark.cms module quickly searches through all articles of your site and remembers each previous search term and how many results were found. While typing into the search field, a list of matching previous searches and the number of entries are dynamically displayed. telepark.wiki security fixes - November 9, 2009

We have released a new version of telepark.wiki to fix security vulnerabilities found by Mati Aharoni of Offensive Security. Download the new version from the Download Center and update your wiki installation.

The fixes concern several application files so a complete update is necessary. In short, we added checks for user permissions in several places and fixed a cross site scripting hole in index.php.

telepark.cms Core on August 10 - July 24, 2009

Our Content Management software telepark.cms is a proven solution for clients in industry, services and education. Each installation was unique, to match and improve customer-specific business processes: video databases for actors agencies, electronic HR forms with approval workflows or big portals for internships. Our ToDo Cycle is a ten-step process and has three aims

It is based on telepark.wiki's ToDo List business module.

Step 1, our customer sends in an observation, bug information or change request either by, phone, email, IM / Skype, fax or a combination of these. His telepark account manager checks and validates the observation (step 2) and confirms it to the customer (step 3). He Step enters a new ToDo item, uploads a screenshot or document and marks the item either as Bug (no cost to customer), Service (part of service contract with customer), Quote (a new request which requires a quotation) or Other (step 4).

In step 5, both the tester(s) and developer(s) get an automatic notification about the new ToDo item and they start an interactive process of "solving, testing, and solving-until-right". Each step of the process is supported by notifications (steps 6 and 7). Enduser customers can be explicitely excluded from intermediate notifications, only being informed about new ToDo's and when they are done, for example. Finally, in step 8 the tester marks a ToDo item as "done" , which triggers a notification to the account manager who confirms to the customer that the issue was solved (steps 9 and 10).

It has proven an effective approach to manage multi-project tasks and to be consistent in high-quality, on time deliverables.
